Nothing says Winter quite like a cosy knit. This season we have introduced a range of versatile, easy to wear knits, made from a variety of fabrications such as mink, cashmere and wool blends, perfect for the chillers months a-head.
*Please keep in mind all our knits are made in an ethical way. All fabrications are cut and combed off the animals & then turned into a yarn. No animals are harmed during the manufacturing process.
Made from real mink and cashmere, this versatile knit can be simply draped over your favourite evening dress or worn with jeans over a simple blouse. Available in two classic neutral colour ways. Ideal for keeping the Winter chills a bay.
We Sat down with Sarah J Curtis -Sydney -based designer and founder of a luxury label specialising in beautifully designed hats-to chat about the inspiration behind her Winter collection and the challenges of a successful business.
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR UNIQUE HATS?
I came into the hat business by accident. Whilst I was pregnant with my second child, I was diagnosed with melanoma — I then needed constant shade and sun protection. Through a wonderful friend of mine who lives in Ecuador, I started ordering custom-made hats, woven with extra wide brimming for maximum sun protection. You tend to walk everywhere with children. A Panama hat matches perfectly with everyday wear, plus Panamas never seem to date!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE SINCE THE LAUNCH OF SARAH J CURTIS?
The biggest challenge is getting the work/family life balance right. I have three children so it’s hectic all day, every day. They’re not the type of children that are happy to sit quietly while doing arts and craft. It’s more like an indoor soccer match down the hallway. I have to wear ear plugs in order to think straight! It can be difficult to immerse myself in my work, ensuring deadlines are being met whilst also juggling the duties of motherhood. What I absolutely love about this business is its creative side. It has become my sanctuary, my escape, my sanity. I honestly could not imagine myself and who I would be without it in my life.
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR AW17 COLLECTION?
I grew up in Adelaide Hills and have been scared by the cold ever since. The inspiration for this collection is the idea of “keeping it cosy”. Rich textures in beautiful colours such as olive green, classic indigo, trans-seasonal grey and a black fedora are hand-crafted using only the best Australian Merino wool. I make most of the bands myself. The materials are sourced from all over the world, my favourite being the heavily textured Belgium mohair and Japanese Jute leather. There’s also a fantastic gold leather band in there too.
WHAT MAKES SARAH J CURTIS HATS STAND OUT FROM THE REST?
I’d love to think my hats stand out because of their beautiful texture and premium quality. Since last season, I have doubled the ounce of Merino wool used to make each hat. You can really feel the weight and durability in each piece. These hats are made to last you a lifetime. It doesn’t matter if they get wet, dirty with dog slobber or if the children sit on them, they will always pop back into shape, as perfect as before. I have even run my car over them (by accident) and you would never have known.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SAMBAG WOMAN?
The Sambag woman is a classic, stylish and sophisticated individual. She is always well presented from head to toe and dressed appropriately for her occasion!
WHY DO YOU THINK SAMBAG AND SARAH J CURTIS MAKE THE PERFECT SYNERGY?
I have always been obsessed with fabrics and textiles and it’s the fabrics that Sam chooses, along with her beautiful prints, that get me every time! I’m thrilled to be collaborating with her. I feel the colours and textures of my latest collection work in perfect synergy with Sambag. You will really feel the ‘mood’ in the store.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HAT SO FAR?
I’d have to say the Olive Green Fedora, just because the colour is so unique and the texture in the wool really does make it super cosy.
Runner-up on Australia’s Next Top Model, Daisy chats to us about her personal style, modelling, her love for Sambag and why it’s her one-stop shop as a younger shopper.
DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.
My personal style is relaxed whilst being fashion forward, so it’s forever changing. At the moment I love platform sneakers with a washed out pair of ripped jeans and plain t-shirt to match. I like keeping it simple.
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT?
A fun dress, structured or lose fitting jacket and a pair of staple leather boots — you just can’t go wrong with that combination.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO, AND HOW DID YOU GET DISCOVERED?
I got discovered as a young girl; I’ve always been around the fashion industry from a young age and was noticed by many influential people, but I was never really interested in pursuing a career in fashion until Australia’s Next Top Model.
What I love most about modelling is dressing up, and being transformed into something I’d never be on a daily basis; it’s such a fun and exhilarating experience.
DO YOU FEEL MODELLING HAS INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU DRESS?
Yes, totally. I never really used to enjoy shopping for clothes in the past, but now being around stylists and designers, it’s like second nature.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ITEMS IN YOUR WARDROBE?
I can’t live without a classic pair of heels. Heels are definitely one of my favourite items — whether it’s wedges, a classic stiletto or block heel, I have a style to suit all occasions and outfits.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OUTFIT TO WEAR TO CASTINGS?
I like to keep it simple — a classic black dress paired with a timeless stiletto heel.
HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY GOOD STYLE ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?
To be honest, I’ve never really received any. Not to sound too presumptuous, but I’ve always had great style!
WHAT ARE YOUR AUTUMN & WINTER STAPLES?
A comfy oversized sweater and suede over-the-knee boots.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE LOOK FROM SAMBAG’S AW17 COLLECTION.
I don’t think it’s possible to pick just one, because I would wear all of them on any given day! The collection is amazingand so versatile while still remaining on trend… though I am particularly obsessed with the Amber pleated skirt matched with the Domonique bomber jacket and Arabella velvet platforms. It’s such a feminine look with an edgy twist.
WHY DOES SAMBAG APPEAL TO YOU AS A YOUNGER SHOPPER?
Sambag products are stylish, comfortable and affordable. They are items which are classic and of high quality, that will last a life time — which is hard to find from brands aiming for the younger age groups.
WHY DO YOU THINK SAMBAG IS SO DIVERSE, SUITING WOMEN OF ALL AGE GROUPS?
The styles are classic and ageless. Sambag provides the basic pieces every woman needs, for all occasions, shapes and sizes, whether you are in your 20’s or your 50’s.
Sambag’s AW17 collection is feminine and functional combined, creating a ‘tom girl’ sense of understated glamour with masculine undertones in shape and silhouette fused with touches of femininity, keeping it true to the Sambag woman. Earthy hues such as green, brown, beige and navy are featured throughout the collection, with dashes of bright and bold colours like scarlet red and cobalt blue adding life and vibrance.
Sam has stuck to her classic styles this season, using a range of beautiful cashmere and woollen knit staples, leather pieces, classics totes, signature ballets revamped in fresh new prints and fabrications.
She has introduced statement styles such as the Britt bejewelled flat, Lilly studded flat, Jamie biker jacket, the Samantha leather wrap skirt and over the top Jada sneakers.
The inspiration behind the AW17′ collection was Sam’s first trip to New York where she was originally inspired 20 years ago. From the architecture, downtown art scene, New York street fashion, Central Park and markets, Sam incorporated her memories into a classic, chic, versatile collection for Autumn Winter 17’.
The campaign was shot on Sydney’s North Shore, the suburb of Wahroonga. In a exquisite, elegant home, you would describe it as a antique collector’s dream.
We had the pleasure of being joined by four inspiring Sambag women of the moment, whom we interviewed for our profile feature, “Sambag style at every age”.
Melissa Hoyer, Brooke Lockett, Alison Izzo and Daisy Davies talk about their love for the brand, lifestyle, fashion and Sambag’s diversity. Our model Daisy Davies brought the collection to life alongside the dream team; stylist Meg Gray and photographer Bec Parsons.
This Autumn/Winter season, Sambag delivers classic, versatile, investment pieces which will be treasured for Winters to come, taking you through the cooler months with ease and style.
2016 has come and gone, and with it trends, to do lists and admittedly incomplete resolutions. As we approach the dawn of 2017 that new year checklist begins to build and the prospect of what should be an exciting restart becomes rather daunting.
You may want to get organised, make more time for yourself and family, or start up that bikram yoga thing your neighbour won’t stop mentioning. No matter the resolve the inception of the New Year brings forth reflection and consideration of what has passed and is hopefully to come.
This can all be a little much (lets be honest) and when everything is working at a pace of 11/10 the last thing you will be feeling is calm, confident and dare I say beautiful. The year has been a big one, the end of it seeming to be the busiest and as you approach the finish line everything has come to a sprint.
Don’t give up nor give in. No matter how overwhelming your New Years Eve, day or week may be we have just the thing to help reinvigorate and reboot that confidently stunning woman you are.
Our Coco Maxi Dress.
Beautifully light and finitely detailed black lace meets an exquisitely intricate racer back design to produce one of our most elegant pieces to date. Paint your lips in bold red, slip on a relaxed black wedge and stun the party (possibly even yourself) in this timeless Sambag classic.
The Coco dress brings back that woman you may have lost throughout the year – the you who is confident, intelligent, unique and effortlessly beautiful. Gracefully step from 2016 to 17 in the Coco dress to end the year just as beautifully as you begin the next.

Christmas day is fast approaching and so to are those present deadlines – your ‘has it all’ best friend, your extremely particular mother, your co-worker (whose awkwardly unrequited gift last year requires redemption), your rather lacklustre secret Santa recipient… all of which have only been giving you one massive headache and yet another memo to restock on Nurofen zavance.
Admit it, Christmas shopping is hardly an easy feat and when you find yourself feeling exasperated and a little shaken nothing helps more than adding a pair of leather slides for yourself in the shopping basket (alongside your mother in laws – try these beauties). Christmas is all about the joy of giving to others, right? Wrong.
Self gifting ladies. Its as simple as that. These days you can be your worst enemy, and at the busiest time of year everyone needs something to help push them towards that 2017 finish line. So why not join 77% of your fellow shoppers and unwrap a gift from yourself this year – lets be honest, we all deserve it.
A staple this season, the slide seems to be the go to shoe for summer! From rubber to fur, brands seem to be creating this take on the slide. Here at sambag we’ve encompassed elements of an espadrille and a slide. Currently available in a snake print but soon to be in an multi colour ribbon and a palm tree print.
